This year’s Mr. Emmanuel’s hollywood themed event was another great success for CASE (Campus Activities & Student Events). The gym was packed with students and staff. The EC Dance Team wowed the crowd yet again with their dance moves, showing up the boys’ skillz and for the first time in a few years we had new hosts.
The hosts for tonight’s event were kept secret, drawing in more attention, and it paid off. This year’s hosts were the beloved Maintenance Men Matt and Brian, sporting “cool” 70’s suits and a comical “all too cool” attitude that EC students know and love.

The night was filled with throwback song choices, some tongue twisters, comedic relief, and lots of dancing. The boys sported swimsuits and formal wear, but unlike the Ms Universe pageant no one messed up their answers (though we did have one refusal–he got a hug instead).
But what you really want to know is that we have crowned a new King. Nick Landry ‘10, last year’s winner, handed over his crown earlier in the evening and treated the audience to yet another Andy Yosinoff impression.
This year’s new king is Manuel “Manny” Silveira, Class of 2010, who won the crowd in his talent portion with his rendition of “Womanizer”. Congrats to Manny and his runner up Jon Ahern ‘11 who cracked people up with his Stuart from Madtv impersonation.

Decorated in flags from Portugal, Greece, Haiti, Japan, and more the Jean Yawkey Center’s gymnasium was filled with student performances, the delicious aroma of food, and the support of members of the Emmanuel community deeply dedicated to preserving cultural appreciation events like these at Emmanuel.

Emmanuel College’s 20th International Hospitality Night was a big success, this past Thursday, and helped Emmanuel kick off the start of multi-cultural weekend. Through the collaborative efforts of A.C.C.E.N.T (Association of Countries, Cultures, Events, Nations and Traditions), the Office of International Programs (OIP) and the Office of Student Activities and Multicultural Programs this unique celebration of the diversity students encounter at Emmanuel, throughout Boston and the world was met with openness and respect.
A mix of food and dance helped keep the Jean Yawkey Center busy for a few hours on Thursday night.Emmanuel students and some students from Showa performed various cultural dances, music (Hungarian violin), martial arts. Such performances included: Soran Bushi (Japanese Dance), KrikKrak! (story of Haitian culture), Ashokan Farewell (Hungarian Violin), Trop C’est Trop (Nigerian-African Dance), Portuguese “club” Dance, “Bachata, Merengue, Salsa” and much more. It’s an event that has something for everyone, and if not students are encouraged to propose new ideas and cultures to celebrate for the following year.

Emmanuel College knows that April Fools isn’t just about playing pranks, this year the college used the practical joke holiday to welcome actress Kate Burton to campus to give a lecture on her life in “Theatre and Beyond.” An almost filled Library Lecture Hall greeted Kate Burton to campus. The audience was a mix of EC theatre students, theatre afficionados, history buffs, and former professors/mentors of Kate Burton. Most of the younger crowd came because of her brillant role on Grey’s Anatomy, in which she played a woman suffering from Alzheimer’s Disease. Others either personally knew her or knew about her past performances on stage and of her old hollywood upbringing.

The lecture was part of the Wyant Lecture series in which Dr Patricia Herlihy, a professor at Emmanuel with a specialty in Russian History, facilitates. The Wyant Lecture Series usually highlights someone who is involved in the Humanities, History, and the Arts.
Kate Burton is most famous for two roles she’s played, Hedda Gabler and Dr Ellis Grey from the hit ABC show Grey’s Anatomy. Shocking to most on her April Fools’ Day appearance, Burton is also an accomplished historian. She found her love for history while attending Brown University. Her dramatic lecture gave inspiration to those in attendance whether it were the lovers of theatre, history, or life.
Kate Burton left our college campus with much advice to students and staff. One Emmanuel College senior remembers her advice on acting “Just do it. Follow that passion. If not now, when?”
ASB- West Virginia

A small catholic university nestled next to the Appalachian Mountain range surrounded by a small town community ravaged by the coal mining industry. That’s where some Emmanuel Students spent their spring break doing community service.
It started in the Spring of 2008 when a group of students from Wheeling Jesuit University from West Virginia visited Emmanuel College in Boston for their spring break service trip.

Spring 2008- Wheeling Jesuit meets Emmanuel College
The idea was to have the group of students meet-up with some Emmanuel students who have been active in community service throughout the greater Boston area and could help the Wheeling group adjust to urban service. The visit was a success in that friendships and service came out of the week long stay.

As a result of this interaction some students pushed for Emmanuel to start up a group to go to West Virginia for their Annual Alternative Spring Break. The campus ministry and community service department at Emmanuel took the suggestion to heart and made it happen for Spring 2009.
On March 7, 2009 a dozen EC students led by 2 staff members traveled to West Virginia to kick off their Spring Break. “Hands down it was the most amazing experience of my life! I can’t describe it” said Catherine Monaco.
Alternative Spring Break (ASB) always grew a large following but this year the Campus Ministry department were able to send more students to 3 different states: West Virginia, Louisiana, and Arizona. At a loss for words most students that came back described the trip as “amazing”, “life changing”, or “the best direct service I’ve ever done.”
The ASB group concluded their trip with their annual luncheon this past Sunday. The room was filled with food, laughter, and hope for a brighter future at each of the service sites visited. Students presented slideshows of their experience in Wheeling, New Orleans, and Pheonix. At $40 a ticket, the office of Campus Ministry and Community Service raised money to send back to the service sites visited leaving not only a piece of themselves but a little extra help before they return in Spring 2010.

Applications for Alternative Spring Break 2010 will be available in the Fall of 2009 through the office of Campus Ministry.

“What does it mean to be multi-racial?”
This question was posed by Andrew Jolivette, the chosen lecturer for Emmanuel’s annual Through the Wire Lecture Series.

The Cardinal Cushing Library Lecture Hall may not have been filled to capacity but the heavy topic of racism and struggle of racial identity filled up the empty seats.
Jolivette captured his audience’s attention with his engaging and comforting lecture style, using popular mediums such as youtube showing both the professional and unprofessional videos (“Post Racism” Prof Michael Eric Dyson & “The mulatto diaries”).
According to Jolivette in order to inform and make social change we need to “invite ourselves into the struggles of others.” He challenged the students, staff, and administration present to redefine their idea of racism and wonder why multi-cultural classes or floors in the residence halls aren’t present. He closed the night with emphasis that change begins with the students.
This lecture was sponsored by Emmanuel College Asian Student Association, the Black Student Union, CASE, CVSA, HUELLAS, and the Student Government Association. “Through the Wire Lecure Series is the College’s diversity lecture series that focuses on issues of race, racism, and socioeconomic status.”
